A Possible Roll-Over Slab Geometry Under the Caroline Plate Imaged by Monte Carlo Finite-Frequency Traveltime Inversion of Teleseismic SS Phases

چکیده

The shape of a subducting slab varies as function trench motion. Two end-members subduction modes are geodynamically possible: roll-back mode underneath neighboring plates and roll-over the plate itself. Whereas most major slabs seem to roll back while Pacific shows piling behavior down ∼1,000 km depth under Mariana trench, no clear evidence in nature has been reported so far. Here we show possible beneath Caroline microplate, revealed from its three-dimensional seismic velocity structure derived by analyzing teleseismic reverberating SS phases. We suggest that is driven at least two factors: 1) overall buoyancy fragility microplate surface, induced thin hot mantle plume rises depths ≥800 km; 2) pushing force acting on trailing edge plate.

Inversion for interface structure using teleseismic traveltime residuals

An inversion method is presented for the reconstruction of interface geometry between two or more crustal layers from teleseismic traveltime residuals. The method is applied to 2-D models consisting of continuous interfaces separating constant-velocity layers. The forward problem of determining ray paths and traveltimes between incident wave fronts below the structure and receivers located on t...

Monte Carlo Quasi-heatbath by Approximate Inversion

When sampling the distribution P (~ φ) ∝ exp(−|A~ φ|2), a global heatbath normally proceeds by solving the linear system A~ φ = ~η, where ~η is a normal Gaussian vector, exactly. This paper shows how to preserve the distribution P (~ φ) while solving the linear system with arbitrarily low accuracy. Generalizations are presented. Crystal phases of soft spheres systems in a slab geometry.

We have identified the ground state configurations of soft particles (interacting via inverse power potentials) confined between two hard, impenetrable walls. To this end we have used a highly reliable optimization scheme at vanishing temperature while varying the wall separation over a representative range. Apart from the expected layered triangular and square structures (which are compatible ...

Evidence of lower-mantle slab penetration phases in plate motions.

It is well accepted that subduction of the cold lithosphere is a crucial component of the Earth's plate tectonic style of mantle convection. But whether and how subducting plates penetrate into the lower mantle is the subject of continuing debate, which has substantial implications for the chemical and thermal evolution of the mantle. Here we identify lower-mantle slab penetration events by com...

Transdimensional Monte Carlo Inversion of AEM Data

The majority of existing methods used for the inversion of airborne electromagnetic (AEM) data use what are generally called gradient-based optimization techniques. They typically minimize an objective function comprised of data misfit (e.g. least squares) and model regularization (e.g. roughness) terms. Since the problem is non-linear, an iterative search involving the matrix solution of equat...
